Course Description
This course introduces the role law plays in the many aspects of children’s lives, age birth to legal majority, ranging from education to child welfare to juvenile justice. The course examines the dynamic relationship among parent, child, and state interests and rights that shape legal decisions concerning children. Students will discuss the vulnerabilities, strengths, and uniqueness of children in relation to legal decisions. Specific course topics include children’s rights, foster care, adoption, medical decision making, regulation of children’s conduct, and delinquency. The course will introduce students to areas of emerging law regarding children and child advocacy and assist students in contemplating their own philosophy on children’s rights. Students will be asked to think critically about the course materials, articles, and reports.
Email communication to the class from the Professor will be through BB, so please ensure that you have a current email address posted. I will publish announcements frequently and as necessary
Course Requirements
- All reading assignments must be completed prior to working on assignments and are intended to assist you with completing class quests (assignments).
- All quests (assignments) must be uploaded on BB by Sunday at 11:59 pm.
- Students will not be able to revise and resubmit quests (assignments).
- There will be three examinations (also known as Boss Battles) during the semester, these
quests will be administered via Black Board.
Course Readings and Videos
This course is designated an OER course – Open Educational Resources. As such, all course material will be available via open resources. Those include various reports, scholarly articles, podcasts, and documentaries and other videos available at no cost.
